Aworano (Bono East), Aug. 5, GNA – Mr Adamu Mohammed, the Techiman North District Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NaDMO), has warned farmers in the district against cultivating close to water bodies.
He expressed concern about the pollution and degradation of water bodies, including the Addaisu and Subin rivers, through farming activities and other harmful human practices.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Aworano, a farming community in the district, Mr Mohammed said agrochemicals used by some farmers were being washed into the rivers, contaminating the water sources and posing environmental risks.
Mr Mohammed led a team comprising personnel of NaDMO, officials of the Department of Agriculture, and traditional leaders to inspect the extent of pollution of the Addaisu and Subin rivers at Aworano.
He called for urgent measures to protect the water bodies, stressing that farming activities along the riverbanks were contributing significantly to the deterioration of water quality.
Mr Mohammed urged farmers to desist from cultivating close to the rivers and adopt environmentally friendly farming practices to help preserve the water resources.
He noted that NaDMO had intensified efforts to protect rivers, streams and other water bodies in the district and appealed to traditional authorities and community members to support those efforts.
Mr Mohammed further advised residents to safeguard the environment by avoiding activities that could harm natural resources and negatively affect future generations.
