Kpone-Katamanso, Aug. 05, GNA — The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA) has launched the Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF) 2.0 to empower young people to develop and implement innovative climate adaptation projects aimed at building a cleaner, greener and more climate-resilient municipality.
The initiative forms part of a global programme under which the municipality has been selected as one of 300 cities worldwide to implement the Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund.
The programme will provide micro-grants ranging from US$1,000 to US$5,000 to support youth-led climate initiatives by young people between the ages of 15 and 24 years. It also includes an open call for proposals from qualified individuals, schools, youth groups, organisations and relevant agencies.
Launching the programme, Mr Samuel Tetteh Kwashie Morton, Municipal Chief Executive of the KKMA, said the initiative would empower young people to transform innovative ideas into practical community projects to address climate change challenges at the local level.
Mr Morton said the grants would support initiatives such as tree planting, recycling, restoration of degraded lands, climate change awareness creation, innovative waste management solutions and other climate adaptation projects that would contribute to making the municipality cleaner and more environmentally resilient.
He said the KKMA’s selection to participate in the global programme demonstrated the assembly’s commitment to integrating environmental sustainability into all aspects of its development agenda.
He encouraged schools, youth groups, community organisations and young entrepreneurs within the municipality to take advantage of the opportunity by submitting innovative proposals that would help address local environmental challenges.
The MCE further urged residents, particularly the youth, to play active roles in protecting the environment and supporting efforts to reduce the effects of climate change in their communities.
Madam Zubaida Damago, the Development Planning Officer at KKMA, said the assembly, in collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropies, would provide technical guidance and orientation to prospective applicants throughout the application process.
Madam Damago explained that the programme sought to empower young people to lead community-driven climate solutions through micro-grant funding, with priority areas including waste management, green spaces, renewable energy and climate resilience education.
She said applications officially opened on August 4, 2026, and would close on September 26, 2026, urging eligible youth, school clubs, community-based organisations and non-profit organisations to submit proposals before the deadline.
Madam Damago added that municipalities participating in the global initiative typically received an initial funding package of US$50,000, which would be disbursed through micro-grants to support youth-led climate projects.
