GJA executives thank members, commit to defend interest of journalists

By Ernest Nutsugah

Accra, August 6, 2025 – The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting journalists and promoting their welfare.

Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the GJA, said the Association would pursue recent cases of assault on journalists to their logical conclusion and continue to condemn all forms of violence against media practitioners.

He made the remarks on Tuesday when he led newly-elected national executives to express appreciation to staff of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) for renewing their mandate.

The team had earlier visited personnel at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation and the Graphic Communications Group and is scheduled to tour other media houses in the coming weeks.

The GJA recently issued an ultimatum to the Ghana Police Service to address reported attacks on journalists, following incidents involving reporters from the Multimedia Group and GHOne TV during the Ablekuma North election re-run.

JoyNews reporter Carlos Calony also reported being assaulted by military personnel during a demolition exercise at Spintex, Accra.

Commenting on these developments, Mr. Dwumfour said the Association would announce its next course of action once the ultimatum expired.

“Violence against journalists during a democratic process fundamentally undermines the credibility of that process. It kills free expression, shortens transparency and sets a dangerous precedent for future elections,” he stated at an earlier news briefing.

Reiterating the need for respect and protection for journalists, Mr. Dwumfour acknowledged the responsibilities of the new leadership and called for unity and support from members.

“We have done it before, and with your support, we will deliver again as we assume office,” he said.

Mr. Dwumfour was accompanied by Mrs. Bertha Badu-Agyei (National Treasurer), Mr. Dominic Hlordzi (General Secretary), Mr. Mustapha Suleiman (Organising Secretary), and Mr. Zadok Kwame Gyesi (Public Affairs Officer).

The executives were sworn in on Friday, July 11, 2025, following National and Regional elections held on Monday, June 30, 2025.

The leadership has pledged to consolidate past gains and work towards a more robust, ethical, professional, and independent media that contributes meaningfully to good governance and national development.
