Rev. Wengam Re-elected Assemblies of God, Ghana General Superintendent

Gomoa Fetteh (C/R), Aug. 22, GNA – Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam has been overwhelmingly re-elected as General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, securing nearly 90 per cent of votes cast during the church’s 32nd Biennial General Council Meeting at Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region.

Rev. Wengam, who also serves as Head Pastor of Cedar Mountain Chapel at East Legon, polled 3,727 votes, representing 89.61 per cent, to defeat Rev. Dr. Kwame B. Bansah of Charity Assemblies of God in the Adenta District of the Accra West Region, who obtained 432 votes, representing 10.39 per cent.

The election returned Rev. Wengam to office for another four-year term and completed the process of electing the church’s top leadership team.

A total of 4,159 valid votes were cast in the contest for General Superintendent, while seven ballots were rejected, bringing the total votes cast to 4,166.

Rev. Dr. Kwadwo Bempah of Holy Hill Chapel in the Adabraka District of the Accra West Region was elected Assistant General Superintendent, while Rev. Dr. Albert Anane of The Father’s House in Koforidua, Eastern Region “A”, emerged as the new General Secretary.

Rev. Simon Abu Baba of Central Chapel in Mim retained his position as General Treasurer after standing unopposed.

In the departmental elections, Rev. Mrs Esther Oduro Dwomo was elected National Women’s Ministries Director, while Mr. Silas Amankwaah retained his position as National Men’s Ministry Director unopposed.

Rev. Michael K. N. Atisu and Rev. Henry Kyei Mensah also retained their positions unopposed as National Sunday School Ministry Director and National Youth Ministries Director respectively.

The meeting also saw the appointment of new officers, with Rev. Boniface Keelson named Foreign Missions Director and Rev. Aaron Lambon Fant, adjudged Best Church Planter at the event, appointed Home Missions Director.

Delivering his acceptance speech, Rev. Wengam pledged to serve members of the church with renewed commitment, humility and dedication.

“To all who endorsed me with your precious votes, you will never regret your sacred decision,” he said.

He described the electoral process as peaceful, fair and transparent, noting that despite the competitive nature of elections, the exercise was characterised by minimal acrimony.

Rev. Wengam called on members to move beyond the contest and unite behind the church’s mission.

“After competition comes cooperation. The competition for the highest position in Assemblies of God, Ghana, is over. A gigantic task to build the church remains,” he said.

Using a local proverb to underscore the importance of unity, he noted that “one person cannot embrace a baobab tree,” stressing that the responsibility of building the church required the collective efforts of leaders and members at all levels.

The General Superintendent said his second term would focus on advancing the church’s transformation agenda and ensuring the successful implementation of its strategic initiatives.

Among the key projects he highlighted was the Centenary City Project, which is being undertaken to commemorate the church’s 100th anniversary.

“The Centenary City Project to mark our 100 years will certainly materialise in our lifetime,” he stated

He also reaffirmed the church’s commitment to evangelism under the MM33 agenda of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship.

“We are determined to evangelise the entire nation and reach every village, every town and every city with the Gospel,” he said.

Rev. Wengam expressed confidence that the church would continue to grow by harnessing the talents and expertise of its members.

“Leadership is about turning bold ideas into shared progress,” he added.

Reflecting on his landslide victory, Rev. Wengam observed that his support had risen significantly since his first election four years ago.

“Four years ago, you gave me 61 per cent. Four years later, you gave me almost 90 per cent,” he said.

He thanked both supporters and those who voted for his opponent, describing all participants as important contributors to the church’s democratic process.

Rev. Wengam also appealed for reconciliation after the elections and encouraged unsuccessful candidates not to lose hope.

Recalling his defeat in a regional secretary election in 2014, he said setbacks could sometimes be part of God’s preparation for greater responsibilities.

“You don’t need to be an Executive Presbytery member. You don’t need to be a district pastor. God can catapult you from anywhere once you remain faithful and committed,” he said.

Looking ahead, the General Superintendent announced that the church’s attention would now shift to the World Assemblies of God Fellowship Congress, scheduled to take place in Ghana from October 14 to 16, 2026.

He noted that the congress would be the first such global gathering to be hosted in Africa and urged pastors and church members across the country to support and participate in the event, particularly the evening sessions expected to be held at the Accra Sports Stadium.

“Hosting an event of global significance comes with enormous responsibilities,” he said.

Following the declaration of results and announcement of appointments, Rev. Gregg T. Johnson, the main speaker for the council meeting, delivered a sermon urging pastors to keep God’s fire burning, describing it as a symbol of God’s presence.

Rev. Wengam later led prayers for spiritual renewal, church growth and God’s glory to be manifested among members.

He also prayed for the sick and both outgoing and newly elected Executive Presbytery officers, assisted by Rev. Dr. Bempah.

The peaceful conclusion of the elections and the 32nd Biennial General Council Meeting, the church’s highest decision-making body, paves the way for the newly elected Executive Presbytery to lead Assemblies of God, Ghana, over the next four years.
