Adzroe calls for Ai-ready, ethical teachers to transform education

Amedzofe, Aug. 22, GNA – Mrs Miriam Jemimah Adzroe, Acting Volta Regional Director of Education, has called for the training of technologically confident, innovative and ethically responsible teachers to harness Artificial Intelligence (AI) for improved teaching and learning.

She said Ai was rapidly transforming society, and the education sector could not afford to remain outside the technological revolution, urging Colleges of Education to equip trainee teachers with the skills needed to adapt to the changing educational environment.

Mrs Adzroe made the call in a speech delivered on behalf of the Minister of Education at the 18th Congregation of the Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) College of Education, Amedzofe, held on the theme: “80 Years of Excellence in Teacher Education: The Role of AI in the Training of Teachers.”

She said the College’s 80 years of contribution to teacher education represented a significant institutional legacy, having produced teachers who had served in classrooms and communities across Ghana.

“Education cannot be an exception as Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming virtually every sector of society,” she said, adding that AI offered opportunities in lesson preparation, research, personalised learning, assessment, administrative efficiency and access to educational resources.

Mrs Adzroe, however, cautioned that the adoption of AI in education also presented challenges, including academic dishonesty, misinformation, privacy concerns, declining critical-thinking skills and unethical use of technology.

“Our objective, therefore, cannot simply be to produce teachers who know how to use technology; we must produce competent, ethical and innovative teachers who can use technology to enhance learning while preserving the human values that remain at the heart of education,” she said.

She said the teacher of the future must be “technologically confident, intellectually curious, ethically responsible and capable of adapting to a rapidly changing educational environment.”

Mrs Adzroe also acknowledged the infrastructural challenges facing the College, particularly the absence of a befitting auditorium, and assured Management that she would communicate the concern to the Education Minister and engage relevant authorities on possible interventions.

She explained that an auditorium would provide the College with an appropriate facility for congregations, matriculation ceremonies, conferences, public lectures, seminars, and other major academic and institutional activities.

Mrs Adzroe, however, said she could not make a commitment on behalf of the Government without the required consultations and processes, but assured the College community that the concern would be pursued.

She said the Ministry would also continue engaging the College and its stakeholders to explore partnerships with alumni, development partners, traditional authorities, the private sector and other institutions to complement government efforts.

Mrs Adzroe congratulated the graduands on successfully completing their programmes and urged them to embrace lifelong learning and use their knowledge and skills to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s educational development.
