Anlo Afiadenyigba (VR), Aug. 22, GNA – Mr. Gabriel Kwabla Kuatsikor, Assembly Member for the Anlo Afiadenyigba Dziehe Ablame Electoral Area, has appealed for logistics and institutional support to improve sanitation and hygiene in the community.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Kuatsikor said sanitation had been a long-standing challenge for the six communities under his jurisdiction, adding that the situation required urgent attention to safeguard public health.
He lauded the introduction of the National Sanitation Day initiative, instituted under President John Dramani Mahama, and said the Keta Municipal Assembly recently launched its version at Afiadenyigba, which had been embraced by residents.
The Assembly Member noted that, in addition, a local by-law now mandates community members to participate in regular cleanup exercises.
Defaulters, he explained, would be sanctioned by traditional authorities, and persistent offenders risked prosecution in court.
Despite the progress, he stressed that the lack of basic tools and logistics was hindering efforts to keep the town clean.
“We are calling on individuals, organizations, and institutions to support us with the necessary tools to help make Anlo Afiadenyigba one of the cleanest communities in Ghana,” he said.
Mr. Kuatsikor expressed worry about the prevalence of open defecation, describing it as a major public health risk. He therefore appealed for assistance to provide household toilet facilities to curb the practice and improve sanitation.
He further disclosed that plans were underway to restrict animals such as pigs from roaming the town by constructing pens, to give residents the opportunity to maintain a clean environment.
Mr. Kuatsikor also encouraged community members to embrace recycling initiatives, particularly in the management of plastic waste, to ensure a sustainable and healthy environment.
