Bonsa (W/R), Oct. 14, GNA – Two people lost their lives in a fatal road accident at Bonsa Cemetery on the Tarkwa-Takoradi highway in the Western Region on Monday October 12, at about 1930 hours.
The accident involved a Nissan Urvan bus with registration number AC 144-17 and a trailer with registration number GE 6440-23.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Joseph Apaloo, the Western Central Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Commander, confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency.
He said the Nissan Urvan bus, travelling from Takoradi to Tarkwa, crashed into the trailer, which was partially parked on the road in the same direction.
ACP Apaloo said 10 people sustained varying degrees of injuries and were transported to the Apinto Government Hospital and the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital for treatment.
He said a male and a female victim were pronounced dead, while the injured persons were receiving medical care.
The MTTD Commander said the bodies of the deceased had been deposited at the Apinto Government Hospital Morgue for preservation and autopsy.
He cautioned drivers to exercise greater care on the roads, stressing that excessive speeding often worsened the impact of accidents.
“Accidents occur, but when they do and the driver is not speeding, the impact will not be severe, so drivers manage your speed,” he said.
ACP Apaloo also urged motorists whose vehicles break down on the road to immediately remove them from the carriageway or place warning triangles at a safe distance to alert other road users.
“Anytime your vehicle breaks down, try to tow it off the road immediately or place warning triangles on the road,” he said.
He further encouraged entrepreneurs who could afford towing vehicles to invest in them and provide towing services within the municipality for a fee.
ACP Apaloo extended his condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
