China says US vote an ‘internal matter,’ seeks continued cooperation

Beijing, Nov 4. (dpa/GNA) – China reacted cautiously to the Democrats’ sweeping victory in the US congressional elections on Wednesday, describing the vote as an “internal matter” for the country.

Mao Ning, the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, told reporters in Beijing that China was willing to work with the US to implement agreements reached between the two countries’ leaders, strengthen communication and manage differences appropriately.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump met in Beijing and Washington earlier this year.

The two leaders are expected to meet again in mid-November at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen.

There has also been speculation about a possible trilateral meeting involving Xi, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Mao said that China was in contact with the relevant parties but provided no further details about a potential three-way meeting.
