Taipei, Nov 4. (dpa/GNA) – Taiwan’s government said on Wednesday that it would continue to closely monitor developments surrounding the US midterm elections.
“We have consistently pursued a bipartisan approach to engagement with the United States, cultivating ties across party lines and actively promoting exchanges,” Hsiao Kuang-wei, Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
“This approach has long enjoyed broad support from both parties in the US Congress and the US administration.”
Building on this foundation, Taiwan would further strengthen comprehensive cooperation with the United States in security, trade and economic affairs, technology, education and other areas, Hsiao said.
The aim is to maintain support from the US Congress and state governments for Taiwan-US relations and issues of mutual concern, he added.
Taiwan has maintained a self-governing system since 1949, but China claims the democratic island as part of its territory. The US, Taiwan’s most important international backer, is committed under the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act to helping the island maintain its defence capabilities.
