Obuasi (Ash), Nov. 04, GNA – The Underground Mining Alliance (UMA), in collaboration with the Obuasi Municipal Assembly (OMA), has taken mobile breast cancer screening services to the Obuasi Central Market, benefiting 200 women.
The three-day exercise was aimed at promoting early detection and improving access to breast cancer screening, particularly among market women who might otherwise face challenges accessing such services.
The initiative organised under the theme “Early Detection,” brought mobile mammography services directly to the market, providing women with an opportunity to undergo screening and receive education on the importance of early diagnosis and timely medical intervention.
Mr. Lawrence Turkson, Project Manager of UMA, speaking at the opening ceremony, urged women, particularly market traders, to take advantage of the exercise and make regular breast screening an essential part of their healthcare routine.
He said early detection remained critical to improving treatment outcomes and survival rates among breast cancer patients.
Madam Faustilove Appiah Kannin, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), commended UMA for partnering the Assembly to advance women’s health and improving access to preventive healthcare services.
She encouraged women to undertake regular breast self-examinations and promptly seek medical attention whenever they detected unusual changes.
Madam Yvonne Adomako Asabere, Project Coordinator, expressed appreciation to the women for their encouraging participation, saying their response demonstrated an increasing willingness to embrace preventive healthcare.
Dr Victor Dedjoe, Radiologist and Chief Executive Officer of Soyuz Medical Imaging and Diagnostics Limited, which provided the mobile mammography unit, explained that mammography could identify breast abnormalities that might not be easily detected through physical examination.
He encouraged women aged 40 years and above to undergo regular mammographic screening to facilitate the early identification of possible abnormalities.
