Accra, Oct. 6, GNA – Police have deployed a special team to investigate the deaths of three children whose bodies were found in the boot of a vehicle at Koblimahagu Zoo in Tamale.
The team comprises intelligence and crime scene officers and is expected to assist with forensic and other investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
A statement issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Wisdom Lavoe, Northern Regional Police Commander, said the vehicle owner, a personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), had been arrested and was assisting the Police with investigations.
The statement said the GIS personnel told the Police that the vehicle had been stuck in mud for five days.
The Police have secured the vehicle for further forensic examination, while an autopsy is expected to provide additional information on the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
On October 5, the Police received a complaint that Dauda Abdul Aziz, three; Saani Alsharaf, five; and Dauda Fadilan, seven, had left home for Islamic classes at about 0800 hours but had not returned.
The statement said efforts by community members to locate the children were unsuccessful until about 0500 hours on October 5, when their bodies were discovered in the boot of a black Hyundai Tucson, registration number AS 1770-14.
Police proceeded to the scene and found the vehicle stuck in mud on a road leading to the area.
Preliminary investigations showed that the driver’s door and the rear passenger door behind the driver’s seat were open, while the other doors, including the boot, were locked.
“The outcome of the autopsy and ongoing investigations is expected to provide further information on the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
“We assure the public that all necessary investigative steps are being taken to determine the circumstances that led to the deaths of the three children.
“We therefore urge the public to remain calm as investigations continue. Any further updates will be communicated,” the statement said.
