Sunyani (Bono), Sept. 21, GNA – Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister of Works, Housing and Water Resources, has commended media practitioners in the Bono Region for upholding ethical values in the course of their duties.
He noted that the contributions of the media practitioners towards the holistic development of the region and the nation by extension remained unparalleled.
Mr Ibrahim, also the Member of Parliament for Banda Constituency in the region gave the commendation when speaking at the fourth edition of the Bono Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association Awards in Sunyani.
He stressed that the progressive growth and development of the Bono region could partly be attributed to the positive impacts of journalists, who, amid challenges, remained committed to their profession without compromising integrity.
The ceremony was on the theme: “Ethics, integrity and impactful journalism: Catalysts for societal transformation” and saw the honouring of nine deserving journalists and media practitioners for their good and compelling works in 2025.
Mr Ibrahim stated that: “I am saying this because not so long ago, in 2020, when the stakes were so high and politicians wanted to do their own thing, media practitioners in the region became a light going into every dark place and telling you that wherever there is light, darkness disappears”.
He acknowledged the numerous challenges confronting the media in the region, like lack and inadequate office spaces, transportation difficulties, and physical abuse and attacks.
Mrs Regina Benneh Siaw, the Bono Regional Chairperson of the GJA noted that the theme was timely and thought-provoking at a time when the media space was flooded with misinformation and sensationalism.
“The theme reminds the media that the true essence of journalism lay in ethics, integrity and the power to go beyond reporting to contribute to societal transformation”, she stated.
Mrs Siaw stressed that journalism ought to be a catalyst for societal development, saying that journalists could not be silent on issues threatening societal growth.
She expressed concern about illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, saying that galamsey remained one of the major challenges confronting the region.
Mrs Siaw advised the media in the region to use their pens and airwaves to fight the menace, however added that ought to be done in high ethical values.
