Ngyeresia (W/R), Oct. 22, GNA – Fishers have been advised to comply with all safety regulations and provisions governing fishing activities at sea to enhance their safety and reduce the risk of accidents.

Mr Kwadwo Kyei Yamoah, Convenor of the Fisheries Alliance Network, told the Ghana News Agency that strict adherence to safety regulations could have helped avert the ordeal experienced by the seven rescued crew members who departed from the Ngyeresia fishing shore in mid-October 2026.

According to him, artisanal fishers are required to carry essential safety equipment, including sails, flares and paddles, whenever they embark on fishing expeditions.

He explained that sails could help direct a vessel in favourable wind conditions, while flares could be used to signal distress and facilitate prompt rescue operations. Paddles, he added, provided an alternative means of propulsion when outboard motors malfunctioned.

Mr Yamoah commended the artisanal fishers in Benin for their successful rescue efforts, which led to the safe return of the crew members and brought relief to their families, residents of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis and the nation as a whole.

He also acknowledged the contributions of local fishermen, the Marine Police, the Ghana Navy and members of the international community who supported efforts to save the lives of the crew.

Nana Kwesi Ackon, Chief Fisherman of Ngyeresia, expressed gratitude to God for the safe return of the team.

“Our hope is to leave an unblemished legacy. God has answered our prayers and we are grateful,” he said.

He indicated that the use of sails would henceforth become an integral part of fishing expeditions within the community to improve safety and provide assistance in times of distress.
