Hohoe (V/R), Sept. 28, GNA – The downpour from Sunday and showers from early Monday, have destroyed properties and livelihoods of hundreds of residents in parts of the Hohoe Zongo community of the Volta Region.
Mr Abdul Wahab Mohammed Seeriboi, Assembly member for the Tsevi/Adabrakra Electoral Area, told Ghana News Agency (GNA) that over 150 houses had been affected in his electoral area.
He said though there were no casualties, the flood had destroyed properties, collapsed buildings, and livelihoods.
Madam Sadia Seidu, a landlady and a victim told the GNA that at about 0800 hours, water started coming from the gutter in small quantities into the compound of a house in front of hers, forcing occupants to start packing their belongings.
She said as they noticed that there was a danger, they moved to her grandmother’s house adding that the place got flooded at once preventing them to pack most of their belongings.
Madam Seidu appealed to government, benevolent individuals, and organisations to support the victims since they did not prepare for the disaster.
Alhaji Yussif Ali, another victim, said they woke up in the night and realised water was just coming to their homes, saying, before they realised, the flood had covered the whole vicinity.
Mr Raphael Kumagah, Hohoe Municipal Director, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), said the Organisation received information that the River Dayi had flooded and his team went to assess the situation in the company of personnel from the Ghana Ambulance Service and Fire Service.
Mr Kumagah said the Organisation was still taking records of victims while advising victims to relocate and do not return until they were asked to do so.
The GNA has observed that the flood water was receding while victims continue salvaging properties.
