Moscow, Aug 18 (RIA Novosti/GNA) – Ghana is grateful to Russia for its support of a UN resolution which recognizes transatlantic slavery as a crime, Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said on Monday.
“During the bilateral meeting, I also placed on record Ghana’s appreciation to Russia for supporting our historic UN resolution, which Ghana led declaring transatlantic enslavement as the gravest crime against humanity. Russia is one of few European countries that did not abstain and voted in favor of the resolution,” Okudzeto said at a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The top Ghanian diplomat thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin, Lavrov and the Russian people for being “reliable and trusted friends of Africa.”
In March, the United Nations General Assembly adopted an historic resolution proposed by Ghana that declared the transatlantic slave trade “the gravest crime against humanity.” The resolution was supported by 123 countries, while the UK and European Union member states abstained. The US, Israel and Argentina voted against.
