Accra, Sept. 10, GNA – The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) has launched its 2026 GhIE Engineering Excellence Awards with the opening of nominations for awardees beginning from September 10 to September 30.
The theme for the awards is, “Celebrating Engineering Excellence for a Resilient and Prosperous Ghana.”
The purpose is to recognise outstanding contributions to engineering practice, innovation, leadership, and national development; celebrate individuals, teams, institutions, and organisations whose work creates measurable public value.
The others are to raise public awareness and appreciation of engineering as driver of social and economic progress; and to inspire continued excellence and encourage the next generation of engineering professionals.
The awards categories include individual excellence, innovation and technology advancement, sector-specific excellence, public impact and policy, and organisational and team excellence.
Mr Ludwig Annang Hesse, the President of GhIE in an address said awards were not simply to place trophies in the hands of deserving professionals, but that it was to raise the standard of the practice of engineering.
“To identify those who are showing us what is possible. To tell their stories. To learn from their achievements. And to inspire others to go further. That is the aim of the Engineering Excellence Awards,” he stated.
He said through the awards, the GhIE sought to recognize exceptional achievement across the engineering profession and to encourage sustainable engineering while celebrating innovation, research, and technological advancement.
“We want to give our young engineers and women in engineering the recognition they deserve and to acknowledge their contributions of the wider engineering ecosystem including technologists, technicians, craftsmen, educators, researchers and institutions,” he stressed.
He said, “As we launch the 2026 Engineering Excellence Awards, let us think beyond today. Let us think about the Ghana we want our children to inherit. A Ghana with an infrastructure system that works and a Ghana where innovation creates opportunity.”
Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister of Works, Housing and Water Resources in a speech read on his behalf said the Government, under President John Dramani Mahama was committed to working very closely with the GhIE as a strategic partner.
“We will continue to enforce the Engineering Council Act to ensure only licensed and competent professionals undertake engineering works in Ghana and promote local content and indigenous engineering capacity in all public housing,” he stated.
He said, “We will further enforce the infrastructure projects under the GARID project, affordable housing, and water sector interventions, and support initiatives that link academia, industry, and practice – because the engineer we train must be fit for the Ghana we want to build.”
He said the awards scheme was timely to celebrate Ghanaian engineers whose innovations were solving local problems, showcasing engineering organisations and impactful projects that deliver value for money;
“The scheme will inspire young engineers to choose excellence over mediocrity, and, importantly, recognise the media for helping the public appreciate the contribution of engineering.
Mr Ibrahim congratulated GhIE for the flagship initiative and assured them that his doors were open to welcome them.
