Kasseh, Sept. 10, GNA — The Ada East District Health Directorate has begun registering residents for the government’s Free Primary Healthcare initiative.
The initiative aims at improving access to healthcare and reducing the financial burden on households.
The registration exercise, which began on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, is expected to end on September 27, 2026, ahead of the rollout of the initiative in the district.
Mr Raphael Kwabena Ngmlotey, the District Nutritionist, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview, that, health workers would undertake a house-to-house exercise to collect information on households.
Mr Ngmlotey said the information would include the number of people in each household, sources of water and the availability and location of toilet facilities.
He stated that the data would help health officials identify potential sources of disease within communities and determine appropriate preventive measures.
He said following the registration exercise, health workers would also conduct house-to-house visits to provide primary healthcare services to residents under the initiative.
Mr Ngmlotey said the programme would place greater emphasis on early detection and management of non-communicable diseases before they developed into severe conditions.
He said early intervention would help reduce complications and ease pressure on the healthcare system.
Mr Ngmlotey encouraged residents to make their Ghana Cards and National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards available during the registration exercise to facilitate the process.
He said many chronic diseases could develop without obvious symptoms in their early stages, making regular screening and early detection important.
According to him, Ada East was among the districts selected by the Ministry of Health for the rollout of the initiative, stating, that, “Ada has more than 50,000 people aged 18 years and above, and we need to register all of them before the official rollout.”
Mr Ngmlotey urged residents to participate actively in the registration and subsequent healthcare services to ensure that the initiative achieved its intended purpose.
He said community participation would be critical to making the programme effective and beneficial to residents.
