Moscow, Aug 18 (RIA Novosti/GNA) – Ghana and Russia have agreed to cooperate in the field of peace and security, including providing support to the countries of the Sahel region, Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said on Monday.
“In our discussion today, we also agreed that we will work on peace and security. You know that the situation in the Sahel is becoming very difficult. It is a global epicenter of terrorism and violent extremism. And we agreed that we would cooperate with Russia to help our brothers and sisters in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger,” Ablakwa told a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow.
Prior to their meeting, Lavrov said he and his Ghanaian counterpart would also discuss trade and economic cooperation, educational and humanitarian exchanges as well as some of the items on the international agenda.
“We will discuss important international issues in other parts of the world, including the Strait of Hormuz, the situation in Latin America and on the European continent, where our European neighbors continue to threaten Russia with strategic defeat,” the Russian foreign minister said.
Lavrov called Ghana historically one of Russia’s most important partners in West Africa. The minister expressed hope for continuity in relations between the two countries, noting that this is Ablakwa’s first visit to Moscow as Ghana’s foreign minister.
The Ghanaian foreign minister is on a working visit to Moscow from August 16 to 19.
