Accra, July 2, GNA – The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Ayawaso West Municipality has held an interactive session at the La Bawaleshie cluster of schools to deepen public awareness on environmental stewardship.

It was part of activities marking the 2026 World Environment Day and sought to empower young people to become advocates for climate action.

About 1,000 pupils from five basic schools joined the session, which included poetry recital, artwork, music and dance, drama, and quiz contests, organised in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) office in the district.

World Environment Day, observed annually on 5th June, provides an opportunity to raise awareness and mobilise action on critical environmental issues.

The 2026 theme: “Climate Action”, with the slogan “Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future,” highlighted collective effort to protect the environment and adopt sustainable practices that contribute to climate resilience and a greener future.

Mr Edem Afeeva, NCCE Municipal Director, Ayawaso West, emphasised proper waste management and urged citizens to be cautious of activities that impacted the environment negatively.

He said young people must be empowered to become climate champions within their communities as climate action and environmental protection remained a shared responsibility.

He cited flooding as a consequence of reckless environmental practices and called on citizens and stakeholders to preserve forests, wetlands and biodiversity, as part of the natural solutions to climate change.

Mr Afeeva encouraged pupils and community members to recycle or reduce the use of plastics to help limit the adverse impact on the environment.

Pupils were sensitised on responsible environmental behaviour and sustainable practices and tasked to play active roles in building climate-resilient communities.

Mr Johnson Azungo, Ayawaso West Administrator, NADMO, exposed the pupils to basic safety measures during emergencies to help protect lives and property, and cautioned against prank calls to emergency contact numbers.

The NCCE Civic Education Clubs were encouraged to strengthen awareness on environmental preservation and help secure a sustainable and climate-resilient future.
