Manso-Keniago (Ash), Sept. 04, GNA – Seven illegal miners have been confirmed dead after a mining pit collapsed on them at Manso Domi Keniago in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti region.
One other miner is still trapped underground as rescue teams, supported by community volunteers, continue efforts to locate and retrieve the person.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening, September 03, 2026, while the miners were reportedly engaged in illegal mining activities in search of gold within the pit.
Following the collapse, residents mobilised to assist with the search and rescue operation and alerted the Police and other relevant emergency agencies.
Rescue efforts continued throughout the night, resulting in the recovery of the remains of seven of the miners, who were trapped beneath the debris.
The seven deceased persons are said to be known residents in the community.
The Police are currently at the scene and are expected to convey the recovered bodies to the St. Martin’s Catholic Hospital mortuary for preservation and further procedures.
Community volunteers remain at the site, assisting the rescue teams as the search continues for the remaining miner believed to be trapped underground.
Meanwhile, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Amansie South District, Mr Benjamin Marfo, together with other security personnel, is currently on their way to the scene to assess the situation and support the ongoing rescue and emergency response efforts.
Authorities and the rescue teams are expected to coordinate further operations at the site as efforts continue to locate the remaining miner.
Residents have also been urged to exercise caution around the collapsed pit to avoid further casualties while rescue operations are ongoing.
Mr Charles Oduro, the Assembly Member for the Domi Keniago Electoral Area, confirmed the incident and provided updates on the ongoing rescue operation.
Further details, including the identities of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the collapse, are expected to emerge as the rescue operation and investigations continue.
