Aflao (V/R), June 9, GNA — More than 400 residents in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region are expected to benefit from the first phase of the government’s flagship “Nkoko Nkitinkiti” poultry initiative aimed at boosting household incomes and local poultry production.

Mr Kafui Agbe, Ketu South Municipal Director of Agriculture, told the Ghana News Agency that although many residents had registered their interest in the programme, only a portion would be covered under the initial phase of distribution.

He said as of the third day of distribution, about 237 beneficiaries had received poultry birds, with a total of more than 4,700 birds distributed so far.

Mr Agbe explained that under the programme design, each beneficiary was expected to receive 50 birds, but due to the high number of participants in the municipality, each farmer was currently being allocated 20 birds in the first phase to ensure broader inclusion.

He noted that the initiative was designed to empower households economically by providing a sustainable source of income through poultry farming.

He added that while beneficiaries were responsible for feeding and managing the birds, his outfit had deployed a technical support team to guide farmers and ensure proper care and productivity.

Mr Agbe urged beneficiaries to treat the poultry as productive assets rather than for immediate consumption, stressing that proper management would yield long-term economic benefits.

Some beneficiaries who spoke to the GNA expressed appreciation for the intervention and pledged to manage the birds effectively to improve their livelihoods.

The Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative forms part of government’s broader agricultural programme to promote poultry production, create employment opportunities and position Ghana as a major producer and exporter of poultry products within the West African sub-region and beyond.
