Rawlings’ philosophy, legacy will endure beyond leadership changes – Dr Agumenu

Akatsi (VR), June 24, GNA – Dr Donald Agumenu, former Senior Special Assistant to the late President Jerry John Rawlings, has said the philosophy and legacy of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would endure beyond changes in leadership.

He said the decision by the NDC to rename its national headquarters after its founder, the late Jerry John Rawlings, was a strategic and philosophical step to immortalise him in the party’s DNA.

Dr Agumenu, who is also the ECOWAS Regional Director and International Advisory Council Member of the Stirling Centre for Strategic Learning and Innovation, UK, said the move reaffirmed the party’s commitment to the ideals of integrity, Pan-Africanism, social justice, peace and development championed by its founder.

He made the remarks in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency.

Dr Agumenu, also former NDC parliamentary primary aspirant for the Ketu North Constituency in the Volta Region, said the recognition went beyond honouring Mr Rawlings’ contribution to Ghana’s democratic journey and served as a beacon of hope for future generations and the party’s commitment to national development.

He noted that although the late President rejected many monumental honours during his lifetime due to his personal convictions and values, the renaming of the headquarters carried deep strategic and philosophical significance that would resonate within the party and society.

Dr Agumenu said Mr Rawlings’ emergence on Ghana’s political landscape in 1979 marked a transformative era that helped position Ghana as a beacon of democracy and economic promise in Africa.

He said the late statesman’s commitment to justice and human dignity inspired many Ghanaians and Africans and revived ideals that many believed had faded from Africa’s leadership consciousness.

Dr Agumenu called for the nurturing of a new generation of leaders who would embody the selfless values of patriotism, integrity, accountability and progressive national development espoused by the late former President.

He commended President John Dramani Mahama, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the NDC National Chairman and the NDC leadership for what he described as a profound recognition that strengthened the party’s ideological and political foundations and promoted peace and economic advancement through democratic institutions.
