Accra, Sept. 9, GNA – The Black Princesses of Ghana revived their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory over South Korea in their second Group C match.
The win came as a timely response to Ghana’s opening 3-0 defeat to Ecuador and significantly boosted the team’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stage.
Coach Charles Sampson made two changes to the side that lost to Ecuador, handing goalkeeper Precious Akanguwie a starting berth while Salma Naazo came into the defence.
Ghana dominated large spells of the contest and created numerous scoring opportunities in the first half but failed to convert any of their chances.
The breakthrough finally arrived eight minutes into the second half when Sarah Nyarko finished off a swift attacking move involving captain Priscilla Mensah and Agnes Yeboah to give Ghana the lead.
Two minutes later, Ivy Osei Owusu doubled the advantage with a stunning long-range strike that flew into the top-right corner beyond the reach of South Korean goalkeeper Kim Chaebeen.
The Black Princesses remained in control and sealed the victory in the 84th minute through Ruth Amponsah, who added a third goal to cap an impressive performance.
South Korea managed to pull one back late in the game, but it was not enough to deny Ghana a deserved victory.
The result ended Ghana’s seven-match winless streak at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and handed the Black Princesses their first points at the ongoing tournament.
Ghana would now shift focus to a decisive final Group C match against France on September 12, knowing another positive result could secure a place in the next round.
