Hohoe (V/R), Sept. 09, GNA – Togbega Gabusu VII, the Paramount Chief of Gbi Traditional Area and President of its Traditional Council, has said the annual celebration of the Gbidukor Festival must change the education statuses and welfare of citizens.
He said a turnaround would enhance the development of the divisions of the Area.
Togbega Gabusu said this during the launch of the 31st Gbidukor Festival at Hohoe in the Volta region, noting that the event was a unity-driven one hence all must work together and that the traditional authorities needed the support of all residents of the area to mark a successful celebration.
The Gbidukor Festival is an annual cultural reunification event rotationally celebrated by the people of Gbi-Dzigbe (Hohoe) and Gbi-Nyigbe (Peki) in the Volta Region of Ghana.
The launch was on the theme: “Transforming lives through the Gbidukor Education Endowment Fund.”
Mr Kingsley Freelove Amu, the Chairman of the National Steering Committee, said the objective of the festival was to review the performance of the past year and plan for the years ahead.
He said Hohoe would host the four-day event slated for December 4 to December 8, 2026, and urged the residents to continue to strengthen the bond since “Gbidukor is here to stay.”
Mr Amu said the launch of a project last year at Peki focusing on the Gbidukor Educational Fund, was to mobilise financial resources to support education within the two Areas.
He said a total of GHS 3,000,000 was needed to support educational activities, and all must get involved to help bless the children through education.
Togbe Appiah Kwadzo VI, on behalf of Deiga Kwadzo Dei XII, the Paramount Chief of the Peki Traditional Area, said the launch was one that awakened a memory, renewed a bond and reaffirmed an identity.
He said the Gbidukor Festival was an invitation for the two Areas to know who they were and how to forge ahead since the journey was one of courage, resilience and survival.
Togbe Kwadzo urged the elderly to transmit their knowledge to the younger generation and create the enabling environments that would sustain history when the current elderly had departed.
He said the diversity of the Gbidukor was part of their history, and all must come on board to support initiatives aimed at sustaining development in these areas.
Some activities to be held to mark this year’s event include. “Entrepreneurship challenge, table tennis tournament, Miss Gbi, Inter School Quiz competition, Gbidukor Strongest, ‘Gbidukor ne zɔ’ (Health Walk) and Hohoe Joint Service.
Others are “Gbidukor Development Forum, Gbidukor Youth Conference, Community cleanup, Creative poetry, Photo walk street carnival, cooking competition, Gbidukor cycling marathon, Borborbor parade and Gbidukor Awards Night.”
