Nine persons nabbed in Adwoa Safo’s shooting incident granted bail

Accra, June 24, GNA – An Adentan Circuit Court has granted bail to nine persons allege involved in a shooting incident in which Madam Sarah Adwoa Safo, former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, sustained gunshot injuries.

The accused persons were admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 each with two justified sureties and are to reappear before the court on September 30, 2026.

Mrs Angela Attachie, presiding judge, granted the bail application after hearing submissions from counsel for the accused and the prosecution.

The accused are Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, Tamakloe Safo Jehosphat, Kwabena Safo, Benjamin Amoakua Sam, Badu Enock, Richard Ayittey, Gideon Safo, Nana Kwadwo Afriyie and Kwabena Safo Koomson.

They have been charged with causing unlawful damage, use of offensive weapons, possession of explosives, firearms and ammunition offences, prohibition of vigilante groups and activities, and discharging firearms in a public place.

Mr Kwame Gyan, counsel for the accused, prayed the court to admit his clients to bail, stating that the matter was a family issue and that efforts were being made to settle it amicably.

The prosecution opposed the application and prayed the court to remand the accused persons, arguing that investigations were ongoing.

The prosecution said the complainants were police personnel from the Surveillance Unit of the National Operations Directorate.

According to the prosecution, on June 21, 2026, the complainants were deployed to Kristo Asafo Senior High School at Awoshie to maintain law and order during activities connected to the final funeral rites of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.

While on duty, the team received a distress call reporting a shooting incident at the residence of Akofena at Kwabenya Musuku and proceeded to the scene.

Preliminary investigations, prosecution said, indicated that a ceremony was being held to install Akofena as successor to the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.

The prosecution alleged that during the ceremony Madam Adwoa Safo arrived at the entrance of Akofena’s residence but was denied access by the accused persons and others said to be dressed in khaki uniforms and armed with pump-action guns and pistols.

The prosecution said the ensuing confrontation resulted in a shooting incident during which Madam Adwoa Safo sustained gunshot injuries to the left side of her face, the back of her head, her left ear and lower jaw.

It said visible gunshot marks were found on her Toyota Prado vehicle, with its windscreen and door glasses shattered, and that she was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment.

The prosecution further stated that police personnel disarmed the accused persons and retrieved six pump-action guns loaded with 42 cartridges and one expended cartridge.

A subsequent search of a Toyota Land Cruiser parked at Akofena’s residence allegedly led to the retrieval of two pistols loaded with 20 rounds of live ammunition concealed in a black bag, while another pistol loaded with 13 rounds was said to have been recovered from Tamakloe Safo Jehosphat.

The prosecution said Akofena was arrested on June 22, 2026, but denied the allegations, claiming he had left the premises before the shooting occurred.

It said a search of his room allegedly yielded 120 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 50 rounds of 40mm ammunition and 25 rounds of 45mm ammunition, which he claimed ownership of.

The prosecution further alleged that Akofena admitted that the other accused persons were his personal security guards.
