Engineer donates laptops to Mount Mary Demonstration JHS

Somanya (E/R), June 3, GNA – Mr Eric Aryetey, an engineer and telecommunications and renewable energy consultant, has donated three Lenovo laptops to Mount Mary Demonstration Junior High School (JHS) to support teaching and learning.

The donation followed an assessment visit to the school, during which he identified the lack of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools as a major challenge affecting academic work.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Aryetey, who is also an old student of the school, said he initially engaged members of his year group to support the initiative.

However, due to the urgency of the school’s needs and the time it was taking to mobilise support, he decided to personally donate the three laptops.

“The best outcome is for the school to maintain the laptops and use them effectively to teach the students. This will serve as a motivating factor for us to come back and do more for the school,” he said.

Mr Aryetey disclosed plans to organise annual mentorship programmes for students, noting that similar initiatives undertaken elsewhere had yielded positive results.

He expressed confidence that the school could regain its past glory, particularly in ICT education.

“We were the best school during our time. If we are no longer at that level, then we must do everything possible to get back there,” he stated.

The engineer observed that the school lacked a functional ICT laboratory and a well-equipped library, stressing the importance of such facilities in enhancing teaching and learning.

He noted that ICT education should be both theoretical and practical, and called for the use of modern tools such as projectors, printers, and scanners to improve instruction and prevent examination-related documents from being processed outside the school.

Mr Aryetey appealed to old students, stakeholders, and well-wishers to support the school in acquiring about 40 laptops, projectors, scanners, printers, and other equipment to establish a state-of-the-art ICT facility.

The Headmaster of Mount Mary Demonstration JHS, Mr Desmond Dedoo, expressed gratitude for the donation, noting that ICT resources have become essential for effective teaching and learning in today’s technology-driven world.

He said the school had previously struggled with inadequate access to laptops and often relied on teachers’ personal devices for ICT lessons.

Mr Dedoo assured that the laptops would be well maintained and used effectively to improve teaching and learning.

He appealed to government, stakeholders, old students, and philanthropists to support the school in establishing a fully equipped ICT laboratory to enhance practical ICT education.
