Goaso, (Ahafo), June 26, GNA-The Ahafo Regional Command of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), has organised a day’s seminar for guidance and counselling coordinators in the various Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the region.
With support from the Ahafo Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES), the seminar held at Goaso, the regional capital formed part of activities to mark the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
According to the Senior Narcotic Control Officer, Mr Kofi Boateng, the Ahafo Regional Commander of the NACOC, the seminar sought to strengthen on-going efforts to combat drug abuse in SHSs.
It also aimed at equipping the participants with the requisite knowledge and skills required to tackle substance abuse among students proactively.
Addressing the participants, Mr Boateng urged the counsellors to draw closer to students who were addicted to substance abuse, care and support them.
He encouraged participants to go back and apply the knowledge they had acquired to make positive impacts in the lives of the students.
Mr Boateng assured the NACOC’s continuous collaboration with them to strengthen anti-drug campaigns in those schools.
Mr Yaw Frimpong, the Ahafo Regional Public Relations Officer of the GES, explained that the seminar was timely, saying that it had provided a platform for reflection, knowledge-sharing and innovative approaches to substance abuse and drug prevention in the schools.
He commended the NACOC, and reaffirmed the GES’s commitment to support efforts aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles in the SHSs.
Mr Kamal-Deen Ibn Chambas, the National Convener of the Red Alert, a leading campaigner against substance abuse, said the organisation was ready to collaborate with the NACOC in fighting the menace in the schools.
He said the establishment of drug-free clubs in the SHSs remained essential in tackling the menace, saying that those clubs would be equipped with vocational skills.
Mr Chambas said needy but brilliant students who joined the clubs would also be provided with scholarship opportunities.
Some of the participants expressed their appreciation, describing the seminar as insightful and pledged their readiness to apply the knowledge they had gained and to guide, counsel and support the students in their respective SHSs.
