Tanokrom (WR), May 06, GNA – School children, volunteers, and well-wishers of the Western Region branch of the Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) took to the principal streets of Takoradi to mark International Red Cross Day.
This year’s event, themed “United in Humanity,” honours the memory of the founder of the International Red Cross Society (IRCS), Henry Dunant, a Swiss businessman and social activist.
Students from Baidoo Addo, Beahu Methodist, Beahu Catholic, St Andrews, Arthur Fisher, and Funko schools participated in games, first aid competitions, and demonstrations of life-saving techniques.
Dr Edward Donkoh, National President of the GRCS, said the occasion serves as a reminder of individuals who made significant sacrifices to save lives, inspiring the present generation to work in the interest of humanity.
He emphasised that the Red Cross remains committed to serving all people without discrimination based on tribe, religion, or political affiliation.
“Let us help strengthen the Red Cross in our schools and homes. We aim to grow our volunteer base from 70,000 to one million. We are impartial and united with a common goal—serving humanity. As this year’s theme suggests, we cannot do this alone; we must do it together,” Dr Donkoh stated.
Mr Benjamin Acquah, Regional Manager, expressed gratitude to the participating schools for contributing to the success of the event. He expressed hope that the Red Cross would become more visible in schools and workplaces nationwide.
He commended the enthusiasm shown by students during the first aid and life-saving demonstrations, noting that efforts would be intensified to build friendships, revitalise activities, and strengthen school clubs.
Mr Frank Ofosu-Asante, Regional Chairman, highlighted the Red Cross’s role as a key partner in emergency management, among other responsibilities.
Nana Blay II, Chief of Akyereyin in the Ahanta West Municipality, expressed satisfaction that the activities focused on the youth, stating, “The Red Cross has a future, and we want to ensure we achieve the one million volunteer target.”
