By Patience Tawiah

Nkwanta (O/R), May, 24, GNA-Mr Bright Gesuokong, the Nkwanta South Municipal Director of National Disaster Management Organisation, has outlined a series of preventive measures ahead of break in rainy season to reduce the impact of flooding in the Municipality.

According to him, the Municipal NADMO office has begun pre-flood risk assessment exercises to identify flood-prone communities using past flood records and the current state of drainage systems.

He explained that community early warning systems, including sirens, radio announcements and megaphones, are also being reactivated to ensure residents receive timely alerts.

Mr Gesuokong also said weather updates from Ghana Meteorological Agency will be communicated in local languages to improve awareness.

He also disclosed that desilting and drainage clearance exercise will soon be intensified across the municipality in collaboration with the municipal assembly.

The Director noted that youth group youth groups and other stakeholders would be mobilized to clear choked gutters, culvert and drains while illegal structures and refuse obstructing waterways would also be removed to improve the free flow of water during heavy rains.

He noted that public education and community sensitization campaigns are being strengthened through radio discussion and community engagements.

Mr Gesuokong emphasized that many flooding incidents in the area are largely caused by blocked drains, poor planning and delayed response rather than excessive rainfall alone, stressing that proactive measures before the peak rains remain the best way to minimise loss of lives, destruction of property and displacement of residents.
