Madagascar backs Morocco’s Territorial Integrity, Autonomy Plan

Accra, May 20, (GNA) — The Republic of Madagascar has reaffirmed its support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco, endorsing the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative as a credible solution to the Sahara dispute.

This position was expressed in a joint communiqué issued in Rabat on Tuesday following talks between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, and Madagascar’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Alice N’Diaye.

The communiqué indicated that Madagascar remains committed to the principle of respect for the territorial integrity of United Nations member states, aligning with Morocco’s stance on safeguarding its sovereignty.

Madagascar also reiterated its support for the exclusive role of the United Nations in addressing the Sahara issue, while commending the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy toward achieving a peaceful settlement.

In that regard, Madagascar welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, noting that the move reinforces international backing for a political solution.

The communiqué emphasised that Madagascar considers a “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty” as one of the most realistic and feasible approaches to resolving the dispute.

Furthermore, Madagascar expressed its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative, describing it as part of a growing international consensus driven by the momentum initiated by King Mohammed VI.

The meeting between the two ministers forms part of ongoing diplomatic engagements aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation between Morocco and African partners.
