Accra, May 20, GNA — Guinea-Bissau has reaffirmed its firm and consistent support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara region, underscoring its commitment to the Kingdom’s territorial integrity.
This position was reiterated on Tuesday by Mr João Bernardo Vieira, Guinea-Bissau’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Communities, during a press briefing in Rabat after bilateral talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr Nasser Bourita.
Mr Vieira stressed his country’s unwavering backing of Morocco’s sovereignty over all its territories, including the Sahara, describing the stance as constant and unequivocal.
He further reaffirmed Guinea-Bissau’s support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, noting that it represents the only credible and realistic solution to the regional dispute.
The minister also welcomed the United Nations Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025. He described the resolution as historic, emphasizing that it enshrines Morocco’s autonomy plan under its sovereignty as the sole serious, credible and lasting framework for reaching a political solution to what he termed an “artificial dispute” over the Sahara.
Mr Vieira expressed satisfaction with the growing international backing for Morocco’s proposal, highlighting its importance in promoting stability and regional cooperation.
The reaffirmation of Guinea-Bissau’s stance comes amid ongoing diplomatic engagements by Morocco aimed at consolidating international support for its position on the Sahara issue.
