Integrity and accountability form the bedrock of thriving democracy – Krachi East NCCE

By Kingsley Mamore

Dambai (O/R), May 22, GNA – The Krachi East Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has emphasized that integrity and accountability are essential pillars for sustaining a thriving democracy.

The message was delivered on Wednesday, during a civic education engagement with 151 students at Oti Senior High Technical School in Dambai.

The programme, themed “Building Integrity through Civic Engagement: Rule of Law and the Fight against Corruption,” formed part of a broader initiative sponsored by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and co-funded by the European Union.

Mr Clement Kwesi Mamadu, Krachi East Director of the NCCE, said democracy could not thrive on laws alone without citizens embracing honesty, responsibility and ethical conduct.

He urged the students to cultivate integrity at an early stage, stressing that the values they develop today would shape their future roles as leaders and public servants.

“Accountability means answering your actions and integrity means doing the right thing even when no one is watching. These are the qualities that build trust between the people and their leaders,” he added.

Nana Boame Robert, Oti Regional Director of the NCCE, said the initiative sought to empower young people to actively participate in governance and national development.

He noted that corruption flourishes where citizens remain indifferent and encouraged the students to become agents of positive change within their communities.

The programme also featured a presentation by Mr Joshua Borah of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Oti Region, who spoke on ethical leadership, conflict of interest and influence peddling.

He cautioned the students against the abuse of public office and urged them to uphold transparency and resist corrupt practices.

In his closing remarks, Mr Mamadu reaffirmed the NCCE’s commitment to sustained civic education in schools across Krachi East.

He encouraged the students to serve as ambassadors of integrity by promoting accountability and respect for the rule of law in their homes and communities.

The engagement forms part of the NCCE’s ongoing efforts to strengthen civic consciousness among the youth and safeguard Ghana’s democratic gains through a generation committed to honesty, responsibility, and public service.
