GBA marks Mother’s Day with donation to Pantang Hospital Psychiatric Ward

Accra, May 15, GNA – The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has donated assorted items to women receiving care at the psychiatric section of Pantang Hospital in Accra as part of activities marking the 2026 Mother’s Day celebration.

The food supplies, toiletries, and other essentials presented to the patients are intended to provide both material support and emotional encouragement to the beneficiaries.

Mrs Efua Ghartey, President of the GBA, led the outreach on behalf of the Association’s National Executives, Greater Accra Regional Bar, and the Women’s Forum.

“The visit forms part of activities to commemorate Mother’s Day, which began on May 10, 2026,” she said.

Mrs Ghartey said the initiative was to show solidarity with vulnerable women and children, noting that lawyers had a role beyond legal representation.

The selection of Pantang Hospital’s psychiatric ward, she said, was informed by the particular challenges the women faced at the facility.

She noted that many of the women at the ward were dealing with serious health conditions, with some abandoned by their children and families.

“Many of them face serious challenges and some are even abandoned by their children and families. We are here to show love to them by making donations of food items, toiletries and other items,” Mrs Ghartey said.

“We hope these gifts will bring joy to them as we celebrate Mother’s Day this year.”

She commended the management and staff of Pantang Hospital for their continued care of the women and urged the hospital to ensure the items were used for the direct benefit of the patients.

Supporting vulnerable mothers had become a tradition of the GBA in recent years, with the Association making donations to hospitals, babies’ homes, leprosariums, domestic violence shelters, and prisons across the country during previous celebrations.

“This year members of the Association are carrying out similar donations nationwide,” Mrs Ghartey said.

These include presentations to women in the Tamale Prison by the Northern Regional Bar, which also oversees the Savannah and North East Regions, as well as donations to the Wa Regional Hospital by the Upper West Regional Bar on May 9.

She reaffirmed the GBA’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups during key national observances, stating that the gesture reflected the profession’s broader responsibility to society beyond the courtroom.

Dr Yennusom Maalug, Director of Pantang Hospital, commended the GBA for the gesture and said it would go a long way to ameliorate the conditions of the patients.

He assured the Association that the items would be used for the intended purposes.

Executive members of the GBA present included Madam Isabel Boaten, Greater Accra Regional Bar President, Mrs Sheila Minka-Premo, President of the Women’s Forum and coordinator of the Mother’s Day activities, and Madam Barbara Ayesu, Regional Coordinator for the Women’s Forum.
