France Reiterates Support for Moroccan Sovereignty over Sahara

Accra, May 22, GNA – France has reiterated that the “present and future of the Sahara lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty,” outlining measures to implement this position, French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean‑Noël Barrot has said.

Speaking at a press briefing in Rabat on Wednesday after talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr Nasser Bourita, the French minister underscored the strategic importance of the Sahara issue to both France and the wider region.

Mr Barrot recalled that the position aligns with the stance expressed by French President Emmanuel Macron in a letter addressed to King Mohammed VI on July 30, 2024, affirming that the future of the territory rests within Moroccan sovereignty.

He stressed France’s support for Morocco’s autonomy plan, describing it as “the only basis for a just, lasting and negotiated political solution” to the dispute.

The minister further noted that United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 fits within this framework, adding that France welcomes the current momentum and the resumption of direct dialogue among all concerned parties on the basis of the autonomy initiative.

On practical steps taken to operationalise France’s position, Mr Barrot said his country had expanded its consular and cultural presence in the Sahara region.

These include the opening of a visa application centre, the establishment of an Alliance Française in Laayoune, and the inauguration of a new school.

On the economic front, the minister indicated that French companies were increasing investment in the territory, with support from the French Development Agency and other operators.

Mr Barrot said these measures reflect France’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Morocco and supporting development efforts in the Sahara region.
