Mutiny attempt in Niger’s capital brought under control: defense ministry

NIAMEY, Aug. 29 (Xinhua/GNA) – Niger’s Ministry of National Defense, said on Saturday that it had brought under control a mutiny attempt, involving a group of soldiers at Air Base 101 in Niamey, the country’s capital.

According to a statement issued by the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, a group of soldiers “who had breached military discipline and regulations”, attempted to detain some of their comrades at Air Base 101.

Gunfire was also reported at several sites in Niamey during the night from Friday to Saturday.
According to the defense ministry, the rapid response of the Defense and Security Forces helped contain the mutiny attempt and gradually restore control over the areas concerned.

Nigerien authorities called on the public to remain calm and continue with their normal activities.
