Accra, Aug. 29, GNA – Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam, General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, has urged African pastors to shun materialism, carnality and complacency, saying the attitudes undermine Christian worship and harm the image of the Church.
Speaking at the National Pastors Conference of the Ethiopia Assemblies of God in Addis Ababa, Rev. Wengam called on church leaders to prioritise deep spirituality and church planting as key strategies for evangelising the continent and advancing the Great Commission.
Rev. Wengam, who is also the Vice Chairman of the Africa Assemblies of God Alliance, was a guest speaker at the conference alongside the Global Chairman of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, Rev. Dominic Yeo.
The conference was held on the theme: “Fresh Revival to Pursue the Great Commission.”
Speaking on the topics, “Fresh Fire to Complete the Great Commission Assignment” and “Seeking the Face of God for Greater Revival in Africa,” Rev. Wengam urged Christian leaders on the continent to prioritise deep spirituality and church planting.
According to him, the two approaches remain effective strategies for evangelising the African continent.
The Ghanaian General Superintendent, who was recently re-elected, reminded participants that the Assemblies of God movement was born out of the Azusa Street revival, which was characterised by prayer and a deep hunger for spirituality.
“Assemblies of God is a product of the Azusa Street revival, characterised by prayer and deep hunger for spirituality. We should, therefore, not deviate from these foundational practices which have sustained the church and propelled its growth all these years,” Rev. Wengam said.
Rev. Ayansa, General Superintendent of the Ethiopia Assemblies of God and Regional Block Chairman of the East Africa Assemblies of God Alliance, commended Rev. Wengam for what he described as his “excellent delivery.”
As part of activities during the visit, Rev. Wengam presented Ghanaian souvenirs, including fugu and ladies’ necklaces, to members of the Executive Presbytery of the Ethiopia Assemblies of God.
