Ho (VR), May 6, GNA – Mr Emmanuel Agbaxode, the former Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Volta Region Chapter, has appealed to partners and stakeholders to provide urgent financial support for the completion of the Volta Press Centre in Ho.
Mr Agbaxode who was speaking at the 2026 World Press Freedom Day commemoration on Wednesday, May 6, at Ho Press Centre, warned that the project must not be abandoned at its current stage.
“Let me commend Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, and other stakeholders for their forthrightness and contributions toward the construction of the facility, which is a bold commitment to journalism development in the region,” he said.
The former Chairman said with sustained support, the centre would become a modern hub for media operations which would equip journalists across the region to discharge their duties efficiently and on time.
He urged corporate organisations, government agencies, civil society bodies, and development partners to contribute towards the infrastructure while stressing that a well-resourced press centre was a critical investment in region’s and the country’s democracy and free expression.
“We need to come together as family to champion this together, it is my hope that very soon many who have pledged will fulfill their promises. Our doors are still open for more support to complete this building.”
Meanwhile, Dr David Esinu Yao Normanyo, the Volta Regional Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council, who delivered the keynote address, during the occasion, called on journalists to embrace peace journalism to promote sustainable national development.
He cited that in the 2025 Global Peace Index, Ghana was ranked 61st globally and 7th in Sub-Saharan Africa but cautioned that localised tensions such as land disputes and chieftaincy conflicts remained threats to development.
Dr Normanyo proposed the establishment of a Ghana Peace Index to rank all 16 regions and 261 MMDAs on peacefulness and guide targeted interventions.
The 2026 event, which was held under the theme, “Shaping a Future of Peace,” brought together regional officials, media practitioners, and dignitaries which reflected on press freedom and its role in national development.
