ASAC Day 2: Ghana still chasing first medal as Nigeria impress

Accra, May 14, GNA – Host nation Ghana is still searching for its first medal after two days of  

competition at the ongoing African Senior Athletics Championships at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra. 

Despite some impressive performances, Ghanaian athletes are yet to get on the podium as competition intensifies among the continent’s top athletics nations. 

Despite having two finalists in the men’s 100m, both Paul Amoah Joseph and Abdul Rasheed  

Saminu placed fourth and sixth respectively, missing out on the medal podium. 

Another medal prospect, William Amponsah, also missed out on the podium after placing 10th in the men’s 10,000m race. 

Nigeria emerged as one of the standout countries on Day Two following a strong showing in the sprint events, highlighted by Tobi Amusan’s victory in the women’s 100 metres hurdles. 

The Nigerian star delivered a commanding performance to secure gold and further cement her status as one of Africa’s leading athletes. 

Also, on the medal podium for Nigeria was the 4×400 mixed relay team, who clinched gold, while Chidera Ezeakor placed third in the men’s 100m finals. 

Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme also captured attention by winning the men’s 100 metres final, one of the championship’s most anticipated races. 

South Africa and Kenya have also enjoyed encouraging starts to the championship with notable performances in both track and field events. 

Meanwhile, Ghanaian supporters continued to troop to the Legon Sports Stadium to rally behind home athletes, with hopes remaining high for a breakthrough medal in the coming days. 

Some Ghanaian athletes progressed to the next stages of their respective events, providing optimism ahead of the remaining competitions. 

The championship, which has attracted elite athletes from across Africa, continues through the week with several major finals still to be contested.
