African Championships Day One: Record-holder Amusan eases into 100m hurdles final as Ghana eyes first track medal

Accra, May 13, GNA – World record holder Tobi Amusan secured her place in the women’s 100 metres hurdles final after an impressive showing in her opening race at the ongoing African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra.  

The Nigerian clocked 12.82 seconds to advance as she bids for a third continental title in the event. 

She faces competition from Ghana’s Evonne Britton, who also secured first position in her race and would be aiming for gold in the final scheduled later on Wednesday. 

In the men’s 100 meters, Ghana’s Edwin Gadayi Kwabla booked a spot in the semi-finals after finishing second in heat three in 10.65 seconds. 

Compatriots Joseph Paul Amoah and Abdul Rasheed Saminu also advanced, each finishing second in their respective heats. 

With the semi-finals and final set for Wednesday, Ghana would be hoping to secure its first medal on the track at the championships. 

Earlier, Florence Agyemang qualified for the women’s 400-meter semi-finals after placing second in heat two with a time of 52.40 seconds. 

In summary, the first day of the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships did witness some great competition in decathlon, long jump, shot put, and many more. 

The finals of the women’s 100m, men’s long jump, women’s pole vault, and men’s 10,000m would be staged on Wednesday with medals to be given out.
