“We are confronting narcotics, substance abuse head-on” – MCE

By Emmanuel Gamson

Effia (W/R), April 20, GNA – Mr Abdul-Majeed Dokurgu, the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), says the Assembly through its Security Council is confronting the threat of narcotics and substance abuse head-on within the Municipality.

According to him, intelligence from the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) revealed a disturbing pattern of drug-related activities among the youth in the municipality.

He added that the intelligence also showed the exploitation of school children for drug trafficking, the abuse of prescription medicines, and the lacing of common local drinks with hard substances among young people.

Mr Dokurgu told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the Assembly as part of its efforts to stem the menace was supporting the NACOC to roll-out drug-free clubs in schools to drive peer education against substance abuse.

He said they would activate toll-free lines for public reporting, and equip teachers with the skills needed to detect drug use among students, while also sustaining community-wide sensitization through durbars and engagements.

“Operations by the Commission in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service are also actively tracking and dismantling points of sale, particularly within the Zongos and other vulnerable areas in the municipality,” the MCE added.

He cautioned the youth to avoid engaging in drug-related activities, noting that apart from the negative effects on their health, such acts could hinder their progress in life.
