Accra, Sept 8, GNA- Mr Prince Bagnaba Mba, President of Forum for Equity has suggested to the government to change the political system to Federalism.
“If for years of practising unitary government system where power is concentrated in the Central government with numerous challenges, why don’t we try Federalism where states work independently?”
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency on some governance challenges of the country, Mr Mba said: “It’s about time to take a careful look and consider the Federal system of governance as an option for rapid economic development as against the present system where there’s no much concentration of power and resources and the national level”.
He said recent population growth and the discovery of minerals in almost all parts of the country with better educated and well trained human resources demanded a redrawing and demarcation of the geopolitical zone for effective federal system of governance.
He said the congestion and near explosive state of the national capital should be considered.
“ Everything shouldn’t be controlled by and from the nation’s capital. The disbursement of funds to the Districts Assemblies makes it look like grown-up adults always waiting to be fed by their parents”.
He said dependency syndrome had taken control thereby killing the thought of initiative and progressive ideas for economic activities for transformation and the expectations for modernisation.
“We are blessed with a country full of natural resources for industrial development and exports. Each federation units based on the re-demarcation would empowered enough to contribute positively and meaningfully to the central government”.
He said economic liberation was the only way out of poverty as the colonial economic structure tried to weaken the District Assemblies.
“The word ‘Federal “should not be seen as a call for separation but rather a call to ensure the strengthening of the economic base at the grassroots. For so long, everything that matters is in the capital…even forest commission minerals commission,savanna development, cocoa and other agricultural crops bodies are all in the national capital.
“Taking a look at the present development of Burkina Faso, Northern Ghana, Ashanti and Volta, Coastal West, Bono as federal states could do better.
Let’s talk about it and see how far we can take the bull by the horns and make Ghana the paradise it should be.
