Tema, April 20, GNA – The Tema General Hospital (TGH) has adopted a multi-faceted strategy aimed at improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes.
The strategy, outlined in its 2025 Quality Improvement Review, includes strengthening staff capacity through training, establishing a High Dependency Unit (HDU), and intensifying public health education at both facility and community levels.
The strategy was revealed by management during a recently held Health Performance Review organised by the Tema Metropolitan Health Directorate.
Other measures include seeking accreditation for specialist training programmes, improving monitoring and evaluation systems, and enhancing collaboration with peripheral health facilities.
Management said the approach was necessary to address persistent challenges such as high maternal mortality, neonatal deaths, and stillbirth rates.
They emphasised that sustained collaboration and commitment among stakeholders would be key to achieving improved health outcomes.
Management indicated that the High Dependency Unit (HDU) has been established and is running while in-house training for staff has been held and accreditation has been granted for a residency programme for specialists.
The Tema General Hospital is the biggest public health facility in Tema and its environs, serving as a major referral point for all health facilities.
It has a 381-bed capacity with 17 wards and 11 units and three theatres with recovery wards.
