London, April 26, (dpa/GNA) – Plans for the British royal couple’s state visit to the United States are under review, in the wake of a shooting at a press dinner attended by US officials in Washington, Buckingham Palace said on Sunday, according to the British news agency PA.
“A number of discussions will be taking place throughout the day to discuss with US colleagues and our respective teams, to what degree the events of Saturday evening may or may not impact on the operational planning for the visit,” a palace spokesman was quoted as saying.
The king was being kept fully informed about developments and was “greatly relieved to hear that the President, First Lady and all guests have been unharmed.”
The royal couple are due to travel to Washington on Monday for a multi-day state visit. In addition to meetings with US President Donald Trump, a state banquet and an address to Congress, appointments in New York are also planned.
An armed man tried to enter the ballroom of a hotel in Washington on Saturday evening during the White House correspondents’ dinner. leading to Trump and First Lady Melania being evacuated as gunshots could be heard.
One officer was injured in the incident before the alleged attacker was detained. The incident has raised questions about the level of security at the event.
