Ho, Aug. 15, GNA – Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Volta Region are set to elect new regional executives today at Mawuli Senior High School in Ho, with keen interest centred on the contest for the Regional Chairman position.
Although elections are being held for 11 regional executive positions, the race between the incumbent Regional Chairman, Mr Makafui Kofi Woanya, and Mr Joseph Homenya, a former Regional Secretary, has emerged as the highlight of the exercise.
Mr Woanya is seeking a third term in office, while Mr Homenya is making a second attempt to unseat him after contesting the chairmanship in the 2022 regional elections.
In that election, Mr Woanya secured 188 votes against Mr Homenya’s 100 votes to retain the position.
The contest is widely viewed as a choice between continuity and change, with delegates expected to evaluate the achievements, leadership styles and strategic visions of the two candidates before casting their ballots.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Bright Kwame Nyatsikor, a former parliamentary candidate of the party for the Adaklu Constituency, said the election provided an opportunity for delegates to make decisions that would strengthen the party’s structures ahead of the 2028 General Election.
He noted that the party needed renewed strategies and effective leadership capable of strengthening its grassroots support base and improving its electoral fortunes in the region.
Mr Nyatsikor urged delegates to elect competent and committed executives who could reposition the party and enhance its chances of returning to power.
Other positions being contested include First Vice-Chairperson, Second Vice-Chairperson, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Organiser, Women’s Organiser, Youth Organiser and Nasara Coordinator.
The outcome of the election is expected to shape the future direction of the NPP in the Volta Region as the party begins preparations towards the 2028 General Election.
For delegates, the central question remains whether to retain Mr Woanya for a third term or hand the leadership mantle to Mr Homenya.
