Wa, (UW/R), Aug. 15, GNA – Voting in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Upper West Regional Delegates Conference is progressing smoothly, with delegates from across the region participating in the exercise to elect new regional executives.
A total of 28 aspirants were contesting eleven regional executive positions in the election, which was expected to determine the leadership of the party in the region.
The Upper West Regional delegates conference was being held at the Wa Technical Institute in Wa where 260 delegates were expected to cast their votes.
As at 1221 hours, 34 delegates had cast their ballots out of the total of 260 delegates expected to vote in the election, while there was a long queue of delegates waiting to vote.
The delegates participating in the exercise included party patrons and elders, representatives of the Tertiary Students Confederacy Network (TESCON), members of the Regional Executive Committee, National Council representatives and delegates from all eleven constituencies in the region.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service were present at the election centre to provide security throughout the exercise and ensure that the voting process proceeded peacefully.
The election, which commenced at about 0800 hours at the weekend, was expected to end at 1500 hours.
The Regional Delegates Conference forms part of the NPP’s internal electoral process to elect executives to steer the affairs of the party at the regional level for the next four years.
Mr Isaac Halitu, the Secretary to the NPP’s Election Committee for the Upper West Region, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that the election had been peaceful so far despite a misunderstanding which erupted over the eligibility of some delegates to vote.
He expressed optimism that the NPP party would emerge victorious, remain peaceful and formidable at the end of the exercise.
