Police pursue suspects in Kotoku Onion Market disturbance

Accra, April 7, GNA – The Accra Regional Police Command has launched a manhunt for persons involved in a disturbance and the unlawful discharge of firearms at the Kotoku Onion Market.

Preliminary information indicated that tension arose among five onion sellers’ associations following a disagreement over the distribution of onions supplied by foreign traders, leading to unrest at the market.

A statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs of the Command, said on April 6, 2026, a clash broke out between some members of the associations, during which gunshots were heard from an unidentified location.

It said Police officers responded promptly to the scene, but the persons responsible for the gunfire could not be immediately traced.

The statement said patrol teams had been deployed to maintain order, while efforts were underway to engage the leadership of the associations to de-escalate the situation.

It said Police patrols had since been intensified in the area to prevent further disturbances.

The statement said the leadership of the five associations had been engaged and had assured the Police of their cooperation in maintaining peace and order.

The Command cautioned the public against acts of violence and the unlawful use of firearms and urged all parties to resolve disputes through lawful means.

It assured the public that the situation remained under control and was being closely monitored.
