Accra, Mar 24, GNA – Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has held talks with Madam Kaja Kallas, the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, during her official visit to Ghana.
A statement issued by the Office of Ghana’s Vice President said Madam Kallas’ visit marks an important step in deepening the longstanding partnership between Ghana and the European Union, particularly in peace and security cooperation.
It said the engagement culminated in the official signing of the Ghana–European Union Security and Defense Partnership, making Ghana the first African country to enter this strategic arrangement, alongside partners such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Norway.
Vice President Prof Opoku-Agyemang acknowledged the EU’s ongoing support for Ghana through the European Peace Facility and the EU Security and Defense Initiative, which has backed over 30 security-related projects spanning conflict prevention, counterterrorism, border management, maritime security, and cybersecurity.
The statement said the highlight of the visit was the handover of security equipment, including Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) vehicles, counter-UAV systems, motorcycles, and drones.
It noted that these assets would improve the operational readiness of our security forces and support Ghana’s efforts to respond effectively to emerging threats.
Considering recent developments in the sub-region, including the tragic loss of Ghanaian traders in Burkina Faso, Vice President Prof Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the urgency of strengthening strategic partnerships to safeguard peace and stability.
She reiterated that peace remained the foundation of development, and this partnership was a crucial step toward securing our collective future.
