Afadzato South DCE donation to boost grassroots sports in district

By Prince Nornorme, GNA

Logba (V/R), Oct. 29, GNA -The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Afadzato South, Mr Manfred Tawiah, has donated goalposts and footballs to Logba Vuinta Akusame Basic School, a move expected to significantly boost sporting activities in the Afadzato South District.

Speaking to the pupils during the presentation, Mr Tawiah said the donation was part of his commitment to promoting grassroots football and nurturing young talent from the community level.

He encouraged the pupils to work hard in sports while keeping their education a top priority, and urged them to make good use of the new facility and equipment.

The DCE also pledged to work towards addressing some of the school’s requests, including completing and equipping its computer laboratory.

Afadzato South District, which comprises many rural communities such as Logba, Ve, Have, Liati and Goviefe, has abundant football talent but faces a lack of basic sporting infrastructure in many basic schools.

Stakeholders say the lack of standard goalposts, footballs and levelled fields has limited inter-school competitions, physical education periods and the ability of schools to prepare for district and regional school sports festivals.

The new goalposts at Logba Vuinta Akusame Basic School are expected to:

Revive regular inter-class and inter-school football competitions in the Logba zone.

Serve as a training centre for surrounding schools that lack equipment, helping to identify talents for the district’s juvenile teams.

Encourage girl-child participation in sports, as part of the district’s effort to promote inclusive school sports.

Promote discipline, teamwork, health and fitness among pupils, and keep the youth engaged after school hours.

The DCE noted that investing in school sports was a key pathway to building the district’s representation at the regional and national level, including the Ghana Education Service Inter-Regional Basic Schools Sports Festival and the Ghana Football Association’s Colts and KGL Foundation U-17 Inter-Regional Championship.

He assured that his office, in collaboration with the District Education Directorate and the District Sports Unit, will roll out a district-wide school sports revival programme to support other deprived schools with similar equipment in the coming months.
