Accra, March 24, GNA — The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has refocused its procurement priorities to address pressing distribution-level issues, Mr. John Abdulai Jinapor, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, has announced.
He said, “Mr. Chairman, we have taken delivery of a good supply of meters and started releasing them.”
“ECG is now prioritising transformers and meters, essential for improving electricity supply reliability,” he added.
Mr. Jinapor made the announcement before the Government Assurance Committee of Parliament on Tuesday during a public hearing.
According to the Minister, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Yapei Kusawgu, previous procurement practices had focused on buying cables, which were not in short supply.
“In 2024, they spent about GH¢9.3 billion on cables. This year, the budget is GH¢1.8 billion, focused on about 1000 transformers with high capacity and meters,” he told the Committee.
The Minister explained that the shift in focus aimed to address distribution-level challenges and improve supply reliability, adding that “By the end of this month, we will start a massive, large-scale replacement of transformers to improve electricity supply reliability.”
Mr. Jinapor noted that the ECG’s renewed focus on essential items was expected to bring tangible benefits to customers, who had allegedly long suffered from unreliable electricity supply.
