Accra, March 30, GNA – Three persons have been confirmed dead following the collapse of an uncompleted four-storey building at the Experimental D/A School at Accra Newtown Sunday evening.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), which reported the incident at 1701 hours, in a latest media update, said a total of 23 persons were trapped under the debris when the structure caved in.
Divisional Officer II, Desmond Ackah, the Head of Public Relations of the GNFS, said two females and a male lost their lives in the incident, while 20 others were rescued through coordinated efforts by emergency response teams.
Rescue operations commenced swiftly, with the first and second teams from the GNFS Headquarters arriving at the scene at 1717 and 1719 hours, respectively.
He said the rescued victims, comprising 15 females and eight males, including three minors, had been transported to various health facilities in Accra for medical treatment.
“The timely and professional response of our personnel, together with support from partner agencies, significantly contributed to saving lives,” Mr Ackah stated.
He said the remains of the deceased had since been handed over to the Police for preservation while further investigations into the cause of the collapse continue.
So far 95 per cent of the debris have been cleared with no one trapped under, the GNFS PRO said, and assured that the rescue and security teams would remain at the scene to complete debris clearing and ensure safety in the area.
He extended the Service’s deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wished those receiving treatment a speedy recovery.
